Next Steps for Projects, Follow up with Committee’s and Event Plans

Below are some initial project ideas for the Access to Nature targets.
  • Every person within 5 min. walk of greenspace. Increase tree numbers in Vancouver.
  • Turn streets in to Parks – Create Temporary GreenSpace/PlaySpace/Marketspace
  • MiniPark Truck that would move around and create a park for a weekend - to allow area to see what it would be like to close a street to become a 'park'.
  • More Natural Parks (increase comfort, increase range of experience, decrease maintenance and maximize ecological value)
  • Learn more about the value of marginal spaces
  • Large Opportunity for Research on Dogs in Urban Space
  • Create learning opportunities about Trees in the City – for kids, adults, diverse audiences– why do trees matter?
  • More research on cultural preferences of nature
  • Age preferences in parks – kids, teens and seniors
  • Outdoor Preschool – what would the parks need to look like?
  • Food in Parks – Street Food Trucks and the ParksBoard
  • Pizza Ovens in Parks
  • Orchards and Social Enterprise Model
  • Planting Trees on Public Realm and Private Property
Greenest City
● creative ways to tell stories about existing success stories in neighbourhoods (i.e. walking tours or a scavenger hunt)
● Images – especially green jobs
● ways to communicate these targets and baselines in a creative manner in the community.
● ways to display this information and perhaps we can tie this into the public art budget.
● Best practice research on CBSM.  This could be an overview of our own programs to see what has been good, and what we could improve on.  It could be a lit review from other programs to offer suggestions.  The real challenge we will be facing is that instead of selecting one behaviour and concentrating on actions that change that one behaviour, we will have 8 or so behaviours and programs.  Researching the best way to do that is something we will need to do.  There's an excellent design challenge in there (design a campaign for water conservation, but it needs to fit into the look and feel of a larger conservation campaign).  My gut says that the best way to try and tie all these different pieces together is through the Greenest City goals and demonstrate how these programs contribute to the targets (on a neighbourhood scale).
● tools to increase the environmental literacy and to elevate understanding of urban sustainability.
